Pebble Beach Concours and the GT40.

Friday, August 26, 2016

If you love and worship Ford GT40s, Pebble Beach was definitely the place to be at the Concours de Elegance held on August 21, 2016. Almost every historically significant GT40 was present, including the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishing cars from the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans – the first time these three cars have been together since that famed podium in 1966.

As rare as these cars are, it is possible to recreate a portion of all of this scene in your own driveway thanks to Superformance. Superformance, under license from the owners of the GT40 Marque, is producing new GT40 MKI and MKII models today at a fraction of what an original 1960s version would cost.

The cars are over 90 percent interchangeable with the original car. Just like the originals these new versions have a steel monocoque chassis and weigh in at a scant 2200 pounds. Also like the originals, the MKIs are set up for any small block Ford powerplant and the MKIIs will accommodate a big block powerplant.

The Superformance GT40s are so impressive they served as the backdrop for a Team Shelby VIP luncheon at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca featuring Edsel Ford II, Henry Ford III, and Ford’s executive vice president of Product Development and chief technical officer (CTO), Raj Nair.

Unlike the originals, these new GT40s also come equipped with air conditioning and a place to charge your cell phone, something Dan Gurney was lacking as he was blasting down the Mulsanne Straight at over 200 MPH.

The Superformance GT40s can be ordered in any vintage livery or a custom color combination of your specification. The cars are also available in right or left hand drive. Contact Supeformance or your local Superformance Dealer to put one of these race-winning legends in your garage.
